Ignite 2019: Microsoft emphasizes strategic value, technical growth of Azure

As attendees gathered in Orlando for the 2019 Microsoft Ignite conference, executives touted new Azure capabilities and the ways customers are using cloud services.

CVP Julie White kicked off the "Invent With Purpose on Azure" session by highlighting a few of the major wins for Azure in the past year, such as the partnership with Walmart and PACCAR's use of HoloLens and Mixed Reality to guide its workers.

As of November, Microsoft has 135,000 miles of fiber linking its 54 Azure regions, with a new region set to come online in Norway, as well as 160 Edge Sites and 20,000 peering connectors. Executive vice president Jason Zander also emphasized Microsoft's largest in the industry 12 TB VMs, partnerships with Cray, NetApp and VMware, and the general availability of Windows Virtual Desktop, which is already in use by 13,000 customers.

White told the audience that Microsoft has redoubled its commitment to hybrid cloud scenarios:
