Ignite 2020: Key takeaways for the Azure community

This year's Microsoft Ignite conference could not offer its typical large-scale physical experience, the pivot to virtual nevertheless featured snazzy graphics and plenty of insight on where Azure is headed next. Among key Microsoft representatives, one theme seemed to outshine all the others: multi-cloud and the closely related idea of multi-edge.

Updates: Hybrid

Hybrid capabilities stole the show, dominating the news out of this year's Ignite. Automanage is one of the new services for this area. Out in preview, it helps customers with day-to-day management of automated operations across Windows Server VMs, implementing VM best practices automatically. Windows Admin Center is available in-preview for Azure Portal to assist with Server OS management directly from the Portal.

Linux workload migration remains a priority. Offerings focused on Linux workloads include Hybrid Benefit for SUSE and Red Hat customers launching to launch migrations, together with options that allow SUSE Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux customers to switch from pay-as-you-go billing to bring-your-own-subscription billing. Flatcar Container Linux from Kinvolk is now available in Azure Marketplace for container workload migration. Azure Image Builder is set for general availability by year's end. It provides a free image building service for updating and patching both Windows and Linux images.

Microsoft's Azure VMware Solution became generally available, with the support of  VMware. It allows customers to migrate VMware workloads to the cloud with minimal complexity. The Azure service includes the latest VMware Cloud Foundation components such as vSphere, NSX-T, HCX, and vSan, while still working with partner services.
