It's Time: How Dynamics 365 users should prepare for Azure Synapse Link for Dataverse

by Kirk Donahoe

The end is near!

Ok, that may be a little dramatic, but it is time for those of you that are still using the Data Export Service to extract your data from Dataverse to pay attention. The service will be deprecated in November 2022. Fortunately, a new service will take its place for applications that utilize Microsoft Dataverse. I’ve written about that service on MSDynamicsWorld previously: Azure Synapse Link for Dataverse.

Azure Synapse Link for Dataverse allows you to configure a near-real-time trickle feed into an Azure Data Lake. Setting up the service is rather easy, especially compared to the Export to Data Lake process for Finance & Supply Chain Management. Another benefit of the new model is the ability to offload historical data from pricey Dataverse storage (~$40/month/GB) to ultracheap data lake storage (~16cents/month/GB). By configuring the link in append-only mode, your organization can capture a transactional history and prevents deletes in Dataverse from cascading to the lake.

I’ve worked with several Microsoft Data & AI sellers recently to help spread the message to make sure that customers are prepared. Some quirks and challenges will be familiar to those of you currently using the Data Export Service. However, there are a few gotchas to keep in mind.
