Microsoft announced a new partnership with Netflix to support an ad-based subscription service.

So far, the details of the partnership are comparatively vague. Microsoft indicates that consumers will have “more options” to view Netflix content. Ads on Netflix will be served through Microsoft, and Microsoft stated that it will protect customer data privacy.

“In April we announced that we will introduce a new lower priced ad-supported subscription plan for consumers, in addition to our existing ads-free basic, standard, and premium plans. Today we are pleased to announce that we have selected Microsoft as our global advertising technology and sales partner," stated Netflix COO Greg Peters.

Peters noted that he expects the companies to evolve both the technology and sales on their ad platform over time.

"It’s very early days and we have much to work through. But our long-term goal is clear: More choice for consumers and a premium, better-than-linear TV brand experience for advertisers,” he stated.
