Veeam expands backup and migration options for Microsoft cloud customers

November 13 2019

Cloud backup and storage solutions vendor Veeam has updated its use of Azure Blob storage and made other product updates aimed at  aligning with Microsoft's architecture and increasing cloud adoption, including by organizations still largely running on-premises systems.

New versions and expanded reach

In connection with the recent Ignite conference, Veeam announced VBO v.4, Veeam Backup for Office 365, which backs up Office 365 environments to object storage. The company is poised to release Veeam Backup for Azure in early 2020. Ken Ringdahl, VP of the Global Alliance Architecture team explained:

Previously we were landing those backups in a data store. For customers, [the new release means] cost efficiency, with backup straight to Azure Blob. We hear some customers say that they want to take it … back on-prem if they have Exchange on-prem. [We are] giving them that flexibility and portability with object storage support.

Ringdahl added that Veeam's consumption of Azure Blob storage on behalf of customers has experienced a 30 percent month over month growth rate recently.
