Workspaces for Supply Chain Management: Getting To Know The New Microsoft Dynamics AX

Supply Chain Management Using Microsoft Dynamics AX - 2016 Editor's Note: The following article is drawn from Dr. Hamilton's new book about Supply Chain Management using Microsoft Dynamics AX. The book focuses on supply chain management in manufacturing and distribution businesses, and covers the software capabilities within the new Dynamics AX as well as AX 2012 R3.

Workspaces represent one of the major changes introduced in the new Microsoft Dynamics AX in comparison to the AX 2012 R3 version. While each workspace builds on existing functionality and data structures, this new interface provides a different approach to displaying information, managing business processes, and guiding user activity. This article focuses on the workspaces for supply chain management (SCM) in manufacturing and distribution companies. These workspaces have been revealed as part of the initial release of the new Dynamics AX, which is now in public preview.

Almost half of the currently available workspaces apply to SCM topics, such as item definition, master scheduling, sales orders, purchase orders, production orders, warehouse management, and configuration technologies. The explanation in this article focuses on information within each workspace related to the embedded conceptual models and business processes within AX.

It is anticipated that additional workspaces and related functionality will become available as the software evolves. The workspaces related to other areas - such as retail, accounting and human resources - fall outside the scope of the article.
