Microsoft will reformulate Dynamics 365 Project Service Automation with MS Project tools

Microsoft is preparing a new product experience that will blend Microsoft Project's project planning tools and Dynamics 365 Project Service Automation.

The company confirmed the news, which MSDW first reported in March, in a new blog post by Microsoft GM Muhammad Alam. The new offering will, in Alam's words, "bring together the industry-leading capabilities in Dynamics 365 for Project Service Automation (PSA) and Microsoft Project, an integrated way to manage sales, scheduling, pricing, project planning, resource management, and project economics."

The first release of the new Project service is planned for Q3 of 2019. It will be Azure-based, use the Common Data Service, and will be available only in Project Online Professional and premium subscriptions. That offering will include scheduling, task grid/board/timeline, and roadmap capabilities, with a roadmap that will eventually add issue tracking, risk tracking, core resource management, and cost management  

On a parallel track, Microsoft will be replacing certain Dynamics 365 PSA tools with the same ones from Project, namely PSA's project planning capabilities like Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Gantt, and task scheduling. Until this transition is complete, Dynamics 365 PSA customers can continue using the current service and buying licenses for it. When Microsoft is ready to begin the transition, they will communicate a plan, writes Alam:

Once the new integrated experience is available, we will announce a new way of acquiring the capabilities encapsulated in the current PSA offering.
