Azure Updates: Azure Purview; IoT Hub; Databricks; FedRAMP High

December 10 2020

Microsoft picked up steam after the US Thanksgiving holiday, announcing the launch of Azure Purview for data integration, together with a slate of other updates.

Azure VP John 'JG' Chirapurath shared that Microsoft has been named a Leader in Gartner's 2020 Magic Quadrant for Cloud DBMS platforms. Other close competitors for the title include AWS, Google and Oracle. He emphasized the integrated capabilities of Cosmos DB, Synapse Link, Synapse Analytics and Azure SQL. Gartner data indicates that the cloud infrastructure and platform services market grew 42 percent year over year between 2018 and 2019. PaaS databases meanwhile have expanded 53.8 percent.

Microsoft CVP Julia White shared details about the newly launched Azure Purview data integration service. Azure GM Henrik Gütle took a look at how Canadian firms are using Purview and Synapse to break down data silos. He wrote:

About five years ago, as enterprises were transitioning to the cloud on mass to reap the benefits of flexible, large-scale computing and data storage, the Microsoft Azure team noticed a trend: While troves of information were collected through the cloud, the systems in which data could be retrieved and analyzed for actionable insights were often only available through individual products and services, ones that weren’t necessarily designed to connect with another. Microsoft released a preview of Azure Synapse Analytics at Ignite 2019 to address exactly this – a limitless analytics service bringing together enterprise data warehousing and big data analytics allowing organizations to better analyze, prepare and manage data for immediate business intelligence and machine learning needs.
