Microsoft announced that it has acquired Kinvolk GmbH with the goal of running Kubernetes anywhere, across cloud and on-prem.

Kinvolk has worked on open source cloud-native distributed computing offerings for eBPF, community building, Kubernetes, and container optimized Linux. Additionally, it worked closely with CoreOS on the rkt container runtime, before moving on to create Flatcar Container Linux, a popular counterpart to CoreOS Container Linux. The company also developed its Lokomotive and Inspektor Gadget offerings.
